Computational Study of the Bible

Introduction

One of the exciting developments in biblical studies in the last few years has been the creation of open source tools for studying the Bible. I hope, over time, to learn to take advantage of what is available so far. This page will track some of my progress.

Corpora

• SBL Greek New Testament
• MorphGNT (morphological parsing of the SBL Greek New Testament)
• Text-Fabric (including morphological parsing of the Hebrew Bible)
• lxxmorph (morphological parsing of the Septuagint)
• Lexham English Bible—a generously licensed modern English version.

SBLGNT as a SQLite Database

• This GitHub repository has code to load the MorphGNT data into a SQLite database. SQL is a nice system to query, and it allows for a more human readable (as it were) approach to exploring the data.
• Quantifying the Relative Difficulty of Reading NT Books—One application of this database is a study I made to try to quantify the level of difficulty of reading various books of the Bible.
• Various vocabulary counts—I attempt to find the optimal order for reading the books of the New Testament.
